Municipality of Trebnje

Embraced by the river Temenica, in the dynamic area between the Alps, the Dinaric Karst and Pannonian Plain, lies the town of Trebnje. Welcome to the green-blue region!

Trebnje is a linear, urbanized settlement in the valley of the lower stream of Temenica, which besides the river Ljubljanica one of the most typical disappearing or sinking rivers. Over the centuries Temenica created the longest blind valley in Slovenia, and has - with its numerous sinks and floodplains – since always been a strong influence on the life and work of the local people. As evidenced by the rich Roman finds, in the Roman era the Praetorium Latobicorum or Trebnje became one of the most important stations on the border between Pannonia and Italy. Today the city has somewhat over 3,600 inhabitants and the number is steadily increasing, which is a good indicator that the Municipality of Trebnje is a Municipality of good living. The rising density of the population is certainly also caused by the favourable geographical location of the city. Trebnje is namely located along the rail and highway Ljubljana - Novo mesto, the construction of which set the city to the centre of economic, political and social happening.

The centre of the town boasts with a magnificent late-Gothic parish church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The church has a big copper bell tower, which can be recognized from afar due to its green colour. In the town centre there are also all of the most important institutions, from the administrative unit and the municipal building to the health centre with emergency room and the centre for social work. In addition to elementary education at the Primary school Trebnje and its affiliates and the Primary school Veliki Gaber, you can also engage in adult education, vocational training and courses. These are carried out by the Centre for Education and Culture Trebnje, which covers the entire southeast Slovenia. As a part of this centre the Centre for Intergenerational Learning and even the Third Age University. The persistent population growth in the city and municipality is also evidenced by the fact that in 2006 only 14 sections of kindergarten existed, but today the Kindergarten Mavrica (Rainbow) in Trebnje and the Kindergarten Sončnica (Sunflower) in Veliki Gaber with a separate unit in Sela pri Šumberku comprise a total of 44 sections. In Trebnje music and culture also have their own special space. Besides the Music School Trebnje, the municipal wind orchestra Trebnje with its 90-year history certainly is the pride of the town. Gallery of Naive Arts is known as the only collection of naive - self-made art in Slovenia and one of the most important ones in the world. Today's collection, which includes more than 1,200 artworks, has been created by over 270 artists from 40 countries since the late sixties on the annual camp of naive art.
The city is developing in the economic field also. In the industrial-commercial-entrepreneurial zone and industrial zone, which are placed on the outskirts of the town, companies of building materials, automobile, chemical and metal industries (Trimo PLC, Akripol LLC, TEM Čatež LLC, Rem LLC, BHS -Bartog LLC., Pan Jan LLC, Avto Slak LLC ...) are operating.

Interesting fact: The 15th meridian passes through the Municipality of Trebnje and the town itself. The Meridian is an imaginary semicircle that connects the Earth´s poles and all the places, where the sun rises, peaks and sets at the same time. In addition to the stone memorial and information board with basic information about the Meridian on Vrhtrebnje, the Meridian is celebrated at the west entrance to the town with a large sign and radio-controlled clock, showing the exact Central European Time.
